Thoroughly entertaining horror-science fiction hybrid features MacDowell as H.G. Wells, who must use his own time machine to pursue Jack the Ripper (Warner) from Victorian England to modern-day San Francisco.
Imaginative melodrama functions successfully as a thriller, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and social commentary, with some terrific chases and suspense sequences to boot.
The scene of D'Arbanville as a trampy broad who meets an early end is to die for!
Logic loopholes abound, but are forgivable.
Best assets are Miklos Rosza's lovely score, and Steenburgen, who is absolutely adorable as the liberated damsel-in-distress and MacDowell's love interest.
