Nightmares (1983)
99 min.
Directed by Joseph Sargent.
With Christina Raines, Emilio Estevez, Lance Henriksen, Veronica Cartwright, Richard Masur, Mariclare Costello, Louis Giambalvo, Billy Jacoby, Moon Zappa, Bridgette Anderson, Albert Hague, William Sanderson.
Anthology movie featuring four stories.

Worth seeing for the first segment - Terror in Topanga - a scary version of an oft told urban legend.

In it, California mother and housewife Christina Raines plays a chainsmoker who just has to get out of the house to buy a pack of cigarettes...despite the fact that a serial killer is on the loose in the area.

After the trip to the local convenience store, guess what else she picked up besides the smokes? If you guessed the said psycho, you'd be right.

But can you guess where he's hiding? This harrowing episode is the best of the lot, and the anchor for the quartet of stories.

Other notable segments include Bishop of Battle which features a fantastic video game/arcade battle (featuring Brat Packer Emilio Estevez).

There's also Night of the Rat, starring Veronica Cartwright who squares off against a giant rat creature about to take over her home!

Lastly, there's The Benediction - a segment clearly inspired by Steven Spielberg's Duel - about a priest (Henriksen) who loses his faith and leaves his ministry.

But he finds a very real evil on four wheels out on the highways of the desert!

An amiable effort throughout, Nightmares makes a great rainy night watch.
