Near Dark (1987)
94 min.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
With Adrian Pasdar, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Jenny Wright, Tim Thomerson, Joshua Miller, Marcie Leeds.
This wildly effective vampire effort has Pascar as a naive cowpoke bitten by Wright, and unwittingly joining a family of low class bloodsuckers who are terrorizing the southwest desert.

An imaginative script relying heavily on the 'practical logistics' of vampirism, but without disrespecting (or contradicting) the history of its own genre.

It's an exceptionally well executed sleeper, with believable performances from the ensemble cast.

The standoff scene in the bar is a masterful slaughter sequence and one of the film's highlights.

Grand "vampires on fire" finale hearkens back to the best of the old westerns.

An original creation all around.
