The classic Universal horror, based on the 1897 H.G. Wells novel and cleverly realized by director Whale (who crafted 1931's Frankenstein).
Claude Rains disappears brilliantly into the role of the overreaching scientist Jack Griffin who develops a serum that brings him total invisibility.
It also has the devastating side effect of causing utter mental instability!
Great showcase debut for the hardworking Rains, his performance perfectly in sync with the playful-then-dangerous mechanics of the role.
The witty dialogue fleshes out the dark comedy nicely, and complements the timeless (& memorable) special FX of seeing...then not seeing...our man Rains.
Another gem from the short-lived career of talented director Whale (1935's Bride of Frankenstein, 1932's The Old Dark House).
