The Car (1977)
|
|
| 96 min.
| Directed by Elliot Silverstein.
| With James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, Ronny Cox, John Marley, R. G. Armstrong, John Rubinstein, Kim Richards, Kyle Richards.
| Basically a big-screen version of Steven Spielberg's Duel (1971), this one takes things a step further by suggesting that the murdering faceless driver is actually Satan himself.
And while the big wheeler in Duel was obsessed with one man, the car in this case is hell-bent on destroying an entire Southwestern town.
With beautiful New Mexican locations, a good turn by James Brolin as a cop, and wonderfully tense moments, the film features one of the all-time great scares: Brolin's girlfriend (played by Kathleen Lloyd) is on the phone to him frightened for her life. She's unaware that the car is headed towards her - and when it does, it plows right through the entire house and out the other side. Good stuff!
